Ipperwash Beach Walk

Year: 2015–2017

A geolocative experience delivering documentary media and interactive visualizations to mobile users during a 2.7-kilometre “beach walk” along a disputed strip of land on Lake Huron. As participants travel between two First Nations communities, they will learn, via a smartphone and ear buds, how Ipperwash Beach was colonized by settlers as they cross a series of GPS points along the water’s edge.

A mobile geo-locative storytelling platform

The Ipperwash Beach Walk was Created in collaboration with Monica Virtue as part of her award winning masters thesis with support from OCAD University’s Zero Lab the project provides a platform not only for Monica but also opens up opportunities for countless other creatives to expand their story using various mapping, data and location based tools.

A continuing effort

Due to the evolving nature of the internet the webapp is still currently under development. Improvements in stability and user friendliness are underway and the entire projects source code will be released to the public for use once it is deemed stable.
